About Green Corridor PlannerGuidelines, Almaty Agglomeration,Kazakhstan GreenCorridor Planner Guidelines,Almaty Agglomeration,Kazakhstan, were developed as anessential complementary resource to theGreenway to Konaev: Action Plan for a Green Corridor inAlmaty Agglomeration, Kazakhstan (GKAP), providing technical approaches and tools to support thedesign and implementation of this ambitious green infrastructure project. These novel guidelinesprovide an actionable framework to guide Almaty City and Almaty Agglomeration in the planningand implementation of sustainable green infrastructure, beginning with the GKAP. This initiative, ledby Akimat of Almaty Oblast, aims to establish a green corridor along the Almaty-Konaev highway tothe Kapchagai Reservoir as part of a broaderGreen Network for Almaty Agglomerationvision. Thevision is to create an interconnected network of green spaces along major rivers, transport corridors, and recreational routes—from the foothills of Almaty to the Kapchagai Reservoir—to addressenvironmental challenges and support sustainable regional growth. The Almaty-Kapchagai landscape presents a challenging climate, ranging from semi-arid to aridzones, requiring specialized strategies for restoration and ecological enhancement. The guidelinesoffer a progressively structured suite of nature-based solutions (NBS), tailored approaches, andtechnical tools to advance green corridor development. These solutions range from basic linear greencorridors, designed to increase canopy cover, to more complex ecological restoration and landscapelinkage techniques, all aimed at enhancing forest and green cover to reinforce ecological integrity andenvironmental resilience. In addition to the GKAP, theAlmaty Tree Management Plan(Almaty TMP)was established to provide Akimat of Almaty and Akimat of Almaty Oblast with detailed technicalguidance on species selection, planting, and maintenance, along with historical context and detailedanalysis of indigenous and exotic species within Almaty and surrounding areas. The detailed technicalinformation in the Almaty TMP provides additional support to the use of the guidelines to design andimplement green corridors in the Almaty region. Together, these resources—this report, the GKAP, and the Almaty TMP—form a comprehensivetoolkit for mitigating desertification, landscape degradation, and climate change impacts across theAlmaty region. Supported by the World Bank’sResilient Landscapes in Central Asia Program,1theseresources provide essential, evidence-based approaches for establishing interconnected greencorridors and enhanced tree management practices that will serve as a foundation for long-termenvironmental health and sustainable growth.
