Scaling up agroecologicaltechniques inthemillet-groundnutand marketgardening value chains Opportunities, challenges and solutions inSenegal’s Groundnut Basin and Niayes Region SENEGAL Key messages uThe resilience of the millet-groundnut and marketgardening value chains is threatened by theimpacts of climate change, including longer dryperiods betweenrainfall events during the rainyseason, overallreduced rainfall, risingtemperatures and water table depletion. The following practices are recommended for theirtransformative potential: uLarge-scale composting, which can be promotedby integrating it with agroforestry and byharnessing livestock droppings from farminghouseholds,as well asthrough partnerships withmunicipal waste management programmes. uThe adoption of priority agroecological techniquesand practices, whichstrengthen systems resilienceto climate hazards and optimize the use of naturalresources, presents a major opportunity toenhance climate change adaptation and mitigationefforts, while ensuring the long-term sustainabilityof agricultural value chains. uGrowing climate-resilient millet and groundnutvarieties, which can be promoted by raisingfarmers' awareness and facilitating access toseeds through local distribution points. uAgroforestry practices, which can be promotedthrough living fences, known for their profitabilityand positive impact on farm sustainability. uIt is essential to remove barriers to access tofinance and to enhance women's access toagricultural resources to facilitate the adoption ofagroecological practices and accelerate thetransition towards more resilientfarming systems.
