This AI boom has alreadyproduced over 2,000 AI startups based in New YorkCity and in 2023 alone, approximately one-third ofventure capital raised by NYC startups was directedThe growth of this technology sector in NYC is largelya reflection of its unprecedented market impact andscale. McKinsey estimates that AI could contribute$13.6 trillion to $22.1 trillion annually to the globaleconomy.iThe United States is at the forefront ofglobal AI adoption and as such the economic impactis expected to be significant. With a $1.3 trillion GDPeconomy, and more Fortune 500 companies than anyother city, NYC is already a living laboratory for theapplication of AI.Because of the scale and diversity of the NYCeconomy and the depth of the AI industry basedhere, NYC is rapidly emerging as the global leader inApplied AI—the creation and adoption of AI solutionsfor real-world problems specific to each of NYC’smany industries.New York City Economic Development Corporation’s(NYCEDC) role is to ensure New York City is equippedto lead and that our workforce and entrepreneurscan access the opportunities AI brings for aprosperous future. NewYork City AI startups are already developing tools to help lawyers grindthrough terabytes of documents, clothing retailers to minimize fabricwaste, and banks to issue micro-loans to small businesses. They’reoptimizing power distribution across green grids, and developing tech that might detect rare cancersearlier or synthesize life-saving drugs faster. AI companies here are augmenting existing jobs as theyWe’ve got a strong tech foundation. Google, Meta, IBM, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon haveopened a combined 6 million square feet of space in New York City in recent years. OpenAI, maker ofChatGPT, just opened an office in the iconic Puck Building in Manhattan. Over 40,000 AI-ready workers,1,200 active investors, and over 2,000 AI-startups – including 35 AI unicorns – already call New YorkCity home. We’ve got the talent. Since 2021, 500,000 recent graduates have flocked to New York Cityand an equal number are enrolled in our academic institutions. We’ve produced STEM PhDs threetimes faster than the rest of the country. And the Mayor and Governor are doubling down on theNYCEDC is working with Tech:NYC to launch a new branding campaign to spotlight our tech ecosystemand to stand up an “AI Advisory Council” to guide its equitable growth.
