At thatmeeting, participants continued to endorse theForum’s guidance that trust in technology –especially new and emerging technologies likeartificial intelligence (AI) – must be earned throughresponsible decision-making while emphasizing thatindividuals and society have agency over the futureof technology.1At the Forum, the Centre for the Fourth IndustrialRevolution helps stakeholders harness the fullpotential of technological progress for the equitableand human-centred transformation of industries, economies and societies. With thematic areasranging from AI to immersive technologies andquantum technologies to space, improvinggovernance is a top priority. To improve governanceacross technological domains, the Forum launchedthe Digital Trust initiative in 2021 to establisha global consensus among key stakeholdersregarding what digital trust means and whatmeasurable steps can be taken to improve thetrustworthiness of digital technologies.Specifically, the Forum’s Digital Trust Initiative, through a multistakeholder approach, has definedDigital Trust as “individuals’ expectation that digitaltechnologies and services – and the organizationsDaniel DobrygowskiHead, Governance andTrust, Centre for the FourthIndustrial Revolution, WorldEconomic Forum providing them – will protect all stakeholders’interests and uphold societal expectations andvalues.”2This definition has informed the publicationof a decision-making framework, high-levelimplementation roadmap3and guidance on pre-implementation steps4and how to measure digitaltrust5for organizations’ leaders. This documentbuilds on these groundbreaking publications, ensuring individuals are at the centre of technology. It further guides business and government leaders,as well as individuals, on how to better recognizethe role of people as vital stakeholders in digitaltrust. With individuals increasingly interactingwith new and rapidly developing technologies likegenerative AI, it has never been more relevant tosupport human-centric technology. This report closely examines the digital trustdimensions of transparency, privacy andredressability according to the perspectives oforganizations, governing bodies and individuals –all with the central lens of supporting individualagency. Business and government leadersare encouraged to prioritize the individual’sperspective throughout the technology life cycleand take a by-design approach, especially totransparency and privacy. The WorldEconomic Forum launched its Digital Trust Initiativeto help reverse this trend by focusing on decision-making in support of trustworthy technologies.
