Overview Business Challenge With Rotary’s attention andresources rightly focused onglobal humanitarian and youthleadership development programs, therecent pace of digital change, coupled withthe increasing digital expectations of newgenerations of members, exceeded theirability to deliver relevant and reliable digitalproducts. It was clear that Rotary neededto rethink how digital strategy supportedtheir mission, and how the organizationdelivered digital products that betterfocused on evolving member expectations. Rotary International is a global, not-for-profit membership organizationfounded in 1905. Bringing togetherbusiness and professional leaders, they helpprovide humanitarian services and advancegoodwill and peace around the world. Rotary’s 1.2M members, represented bymore than 36,000 local clubs, have beeninstrumental in the fight to eradicatepolio. Their worldwide youth programs aredeveloping the next generation of service-minded community leaders. Rotary’spartnerships with such organizations asUNICEF, the Gates Foundation, and USAIDare extending the humanitarian reach oftheir members on a global scale. Theircurrent activities are focused on diseaseprevention, literacy, and bringing cleanwater to the developing world, amongothers. Recognizing the role digital technologiescould play in member engagement, Rotaryengaged SoftServe to lead them througha Digital Strategy Transformation. SoftServe’s Approach SoftServe’s work with Rotary beganwith a series of triage efforts to firststabilize their key member supportproducts, so their attention could be bettertuned to problem framing and ideation.Next, SoftServe led Rotary through a DigitalMaturity Assessment, identifying the specificpeople, process, and technology issues thatrequired attention and evaluating Rotary’scapacity for transformative change. Findingsfrom the Digital Maturity Assessmentthen led to a focused, four-month,comprehensive, and multidisciplinary DigitalStrategy Transformation engagementdesigned specifically to help Rotaryevolve into a truly member-focusedand digitally enabled organization. Business Value Rotary and SoftServe’s collaboration led to the development of a comprehensiveDigital Strategy Transformation Playbook. By introducing this playbook, Rotary: •Extensively redefined how digital product development will work in the future.•Included comprehensive processes, supported by redefined roles andresponsibilities for key contributors to the digital processes.•Introduced a comprehensive restructuring of the organization. While a top-to-bottom reorganizationof the IT team and rebuilding of productteams could have been expected, thekeystone of Rotary’s Digital StrategyTransformation Playbook was a newfunction focused on strategic Customer360 concepts. Rotary’s Digital Transformation Playbookencompassed the following areas: •The Digital Strategy Roadmapestablished clear definitions of digitalproducts and provided a roadmapfor establishing teams and skills toimplement, innovate, and thrive in adigital-first world. ThisMember Experienceteam drew onRotary’s established functions in researchand business intelligence and coupledthem with new focuses on memberexperiences and service design to createa service organization to support not onlydigital experiences but also all of Rotary’sreal-world membership community andtheir humanitarian and service missions. •The Rotary Digital ProductsManifestowas written in the themeand spirit of the Agile Manifesto. Itdefinitively established Rotary’s digitaltransformation path based on theirmission and culture. •Data Strategyis a call-to-action forRotary to embrace a data-drivenculture. It supports and informs Rotary’soverall digital strategy, and thus theirorganizational strategy, with specificbusiness cases. This includes everythingfrom data-informed participantmanagement to cycles of productstrategy validated by Rotary’s millions ofparticipants.
