First, they have a common history, shaped by shared origins andcenturies of political alliances. Second, they uphold common values, including adeep commitment to fairness, equality, democracy, and social trust. Third, theyshare cultural elements, from closely related languages and religious traditions tosimilar economic models. Fourth, they are all located in the northern part of theglobe, de ined by a unique climate and weather conditions—marked by long, coldwinters. And last but not least, the ifth, they share distinct geographical andtopographical features, including long coastlines and ocean territories that oftenexceed their land areas. All these factors are equally important. However, it is this last factor—the Ocean—that plays a particularly de ining role. The Nordic countries are fundamentallyocean-based nations. On average, their combined ocean areas are twice the size oftheir land areas, with countries like Norway and Iceland pushing this ratio evenfurther—six or seven times larger. The Ocean has not only shaped the region’sgeography—but it has been instrumental in the formation, development, andgrowth of Nordic societies in the irst place. It made life and civilization possible inthese northern lands. The very termcomes fromextreme latitudes, it was the Ocean that made settlement possible in the Nordics. Here’s how:NordicThe Ocean moderates the climate, thanks to the Gulf Stream, which warmsmuch of the region’s coastline.
