Demand planning iswhat drives results in today’s fast-moving, ever-changing business environment. But achievingexcellence in demand planning requires supply chain leaders to embrace a new mindset thatincludes taking the following three actions: 1.Use businessobjectives to driveplanning outcomes. 2.Build an action planthat focuses on thegap first. 3.Use scenarioplanning to developcontingencies. Build scenarios based on agreed-onassumptions; prioritize them based ontheir likelihood and impact; and developscenarios around supply chain constraints.Then build documented action plansfor your scenarios. Plans should haveenough detail to enable fast execution,and include measures for assessingchanges in business climate. Ensure thatkey stakeholders agree on metric thresholdsthat trigger a change in plans. Acknowledge that the gap is there, isall forecast error, and is risk. See youraction plan as a plan, not a number.Actions shape demand, and data helps topredict outcomes (e.g., products, volumes).The plan should be executable (defining“what” and “when”) and input into theplanning system of record. Use the revenue budget as a top-downobjective for demand, and monetize yourbottom-up demand forecasts. Documentthe assumptions that justify projections,use past data to predict future performance,and define normal demand variation. Focusdemand planning on goal and forecastgaps.
