Digital transformationin airports Technologyand IT investmentoutlook About this study In this report, we set out to achieve three goals: to assessthe current state of airport operations, to identify pressingneeds in the airport ecosystem and to explore the strategicsteps required to meet these needs. With this in mind,we take a close look at the interplay between operationalperformance, customer needs and technologicalinnovation, using our findings to derive actionable insightsfor airports. In order to understand the industry's transformationneeds and opportunities, we conducted a global surveyof 100 key stakeholders from across the airport ecosystem. The participants represent a broad spectrum of the industry, including respondents from airports (84%), airlines (9%),ground handlers (5%) and aviation service providers (2%).They come from four major geographic regions:Europe (37%), the Americas (26%), Asia-Pacific (23%) andMiddleEast and Africa (14%). Respondents were on average46 years old and predominantly male (87%). The survey consisted of 48 questions organized into ninesections, covering topics such as the current status ofdigital transformation at airports, transformation needs, investment behavior, potential solutions, self-assessment,trends and future growth levers. Thanks to its comprehensivedesign, it provides a holistic view of the industry's currentlandscape and future direction, enabling a deeperunderstanding of how airports can best position themselvesfor long-term success. On the following pages we presentkey insights drawn from the survey results. Executive Summary As airports face increasing pressure from rising passenger numbers, evolving traveler expectations and cost challenges, the industrystands at a turning point. Digital transformation is no longer optional —it is essential. Yet, only 44% of airport industry executives are satisfiedwith the current state of innovation in airport IT solutions, revealing aclear gap between existing capabilities and future needs. The ambition to close this gap is evident: nearly all airport operatorssurveyed intend to increase their investment in IT solutions over thenext five years. This reflects a strong commitment to modernizationand a recognition that technology is the key to staying competitive.Airports themselves are expected to be the primary drivers of growthin airport services and IT solutions, especially Tier 1 and Tier 2 airports, which must enhance their operational efficiency to manage capacityconstraints. Artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as a promising lever for drivingefficiency. However, more than half of organizations report that AIimplementation is still in its early stages, and organizational readinessremains low. There is a pressing need to move beyond pilot programsand integrate AI into core operations — from predictive analytics tobaggage handling and queue management. In parallel, biometric technologies are gaining traction as criticalenablers for seamless passenger experiences and more efficientprocesses. From facial recognition to automated check-ins,biometrics reduce labor dependency, accelerate throughput andenhance accuracy. The findings of this study highlight a clear mandate: airport operatorsmust accelerate their transformation journey. Investments in IT, AI andautomation are critical to future-proofing operations, enhancing thepassenger experience and positioning airports as high-performing,resilient hubs in a rapidly evolving landscape. Introduction Air travel and the airport landscape face fundamental changesin the years ahead. As these changes unfold, airports need tomodernize their operations and bridge the gap between capabilitiesand requirements – enhancing their efficiency, improving thecustomer experience and capitalizing on growth opportunities inan increasingly competitive industry. To understand the need for action, we first need to look at whatis driving this pressure on airports to transform. The first factor isgrowth in passenger numbers, which are expected to doubleoverthe next ten years. Limited opportunities exist to expand thecapacity for passengers at airports, so the solution lies inimplementing technology to enhance operational efficiency. Oursurvey reveals that airport operators consider AI-driven solutionshighly promising as a way to improve efficiency, but they alsothink that existing solutions show some room for improvement. The actual implementation of AI at airports is still in its infancyand action is clearly needed on this front. The second factor driving the need for transformation ischangingpassenger requirements. Increasingly, passengers expect a seamlessend-to-end journey. Our survey respondents believe that digitalsolutions are an important way to improve the customer experience –yet despite this, only one-third of them say their airport operationsare well positioned to adopt to AI-driven solutions. This representsanother key area for action. The third factor is therising co
