2024 Fujitsu SX Survey Accelerating SustainabilityTransformation with AI Practical insights for C-level executives Preface Rapid advances in technology are creatingenormous changes across both business andsociety. At the same time, the sustainabilitychallenges caused by geopolitical tensions andclimate change have become urgent businesspriorities. Since 2022, Fujitsu has surveyed business leadersaround the world, assessing their SustainabilityTransformation (SX) initiatives. Our survey1inNovember and December 2023 revealed that overhalf (53%) of business leaders are activelyreviewing these activities. In particular, the business environment is changingrapidly due to advances in AI. In January 2024,Fujitsu surveyed 800 CxOs across 15 countries tounderstand how their organizations are now usingAI and how technologies such as AI are supportingtheir SX activities. This report summarizes the insights gained fromthe survey and proposes calls to action forbusiness leaders to successfully drive SustainabilityTransformation using AI and other digitaltechnologies. InJanuary 2024, Fujitsu commissioned OxfordEconomics to conduct a survey on the businessimpact of rapid AI adoption, the status ofSustainability Transformation, and how thistransformation can be driven by AI and otherdigital technologies. Respondents also recognized that in the future, therapid adoption of AI will require employees todevelop new skills. However, they hold mixedviews on the possible implications that AI couldhave on employment and overall headcount levels. At the same time, many respondents believe thatincreasing AI usage will support their SustainabilityTransformation plans. In fact, organizations thathave successfully delivered financial and non-financial outcomes through their SustainabilityTransformation have typically increased theirinvestment in AI and are actively using AI acrosstheir organizations. Fujitsu and Oxford Economics conducted an on-line survey of 800 business leaders (CxOs) across14 industries in 15 countries. Interviews were alsoconducted with CxOs at 12 organizations that areimplementing Sustainability Transformationstrategies. The interviews looked at the status of AIimplementation, and the SustainabilityTransformation outcomes being achieved usingdigital technology. These survey results are consistent with Fujitsu’sbelief that greater use of AI and other digitaltechnologies will enable successful SustainabilityTransformation. According to our survey, many respondents expectAI to dramatically change business and society andare therefore upscaling their AI initiatives. Theypredict AI will be integrated into every part of theirbusiness within the next three years. This report proposes specific calls to action to helpbusiness leaders drive successful SustainabilityTransformation using AI and other digitaltechnologies. Key findings Our survey explored business leaders’ attitudestowards AI and its current usage across theirorganizations: Our survey also examined the impact of digitaltechnology on Sustainability Transformationinitiatives: 1The process of converting sustainabilityinitiatives into new business opportunities isunderway. While many leaders see addressingsustainability as a business opportunity, onlyaround 10% of organizations are generatingsteady revenue from these opportunities. 1Business leaders are strengthening their AIinitiatives in recognition of the huge changesthat AI is creating across business and society. 2The use of AI will rapidly expand into otherareas. Business leaders predict that AI willpermeate a wide range of tasks within thenext three years. They also believe that peoplewill need to develop the skills to work with AI,unlocking their own creativity and ensuringthat people and AI can collaborate effectively. 2AI and Digital Transformation can drivesuccessful Sustainability Transformation. Over60% of leaders recognize that increased use ofAI will enable Digital Transformation and helpto solve societal challenges. 3The integration between managementresources and AI is still in progress.Organizations are at various stages of AIreadiness. Around 40% of organizations haveyet to set an organization-wide AI strategy,while only 12% have the resources to use AI,based on a comprehensive AI strategy andusage guidelines. 3The use of AI and other technologies is key.Organizations that create a sustainability visionand strategy, strengthen their organizationalcapability and proactively use AI and othertechnologies succeed in driving greatersustainability and financial value than otherorganizations.
