Biomass, pumped storage, coal, oil, andgas electricity generation can meet these criteria and hence can be DispatchablePower sources. Nuclear can be dispatched against an agreed schedule but is not flexible.Wind and solar electricity cannot be scheduled and hence are not Dispatchable. Anelectricity system requires sufficient Dispatchable Power to operate and remain safe.Renewable poweris derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher ratethan they are consumed. This is how we are creating impact: To be a UK leader indispatchable, renewablegeneration Strategic pillarPage 20 At a glance We are committed to enabling a zero carbon, lower cost energy future. Ourstrategic aims are to be a global leader in both sustainable biomass pellets andcarbon removals, and to be a UK leader in dispatchable, renewable generation. Drax is the second largest producer of sustainable biomass globally, and the UK’slargest source of renewable power by output. We are progressing options forcarbon removals using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). Our integrated flexible and renewable value chain Pellet Production Generation Customers Sustainably sourced biomass is a renewable,low-carbon source of energy and a keyelement in the road to net zero. This is atthe heart of our purpose. The material weuse to make pellets includes sawmill andother wood industry residues and forestresiduals (which includes low graderoundwood, thinnings, branches and tops). They provide a sustainable, low-carbon fuelsource that can be safely and efficientlydelivered through our global supply chain. Our portfolio of flexible, low-carbon andrenewable UK power assets – biomass, hydro, and pumped storage generation –provides dispatchable, renewable powerand system support services to theelectricity grid. Our Customers business sells renewableelectricity to industrial and commercialcustomers in the UK. The business also offers non-generationsystem support and energy managementservices to help customers cut costs andreduce their emissions. Our dispatchable power assets – whichcan be turned up or down, or switchedon or off, at short notice to provide (ordispatch) a flexible response to changesin electricity demand – have an importantrole to play in enabling the transition tomore renewable energy and a moreflexible energy system: generatingrenewable electricity when the sundoesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow. This includes the provision ofdecarbonisation services, such as vehiclefleet electrification, implementing acharging infrastructure, or optimisingelectric assets. It also helps cus
