According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, China’s grossdomestic product for 2023 was RMB126.1 trillion1, representing anincrease of 5.2% as compared to the same period of last year. Inthe first year following the lifting of pandemic restrictions, supply anddemand showed steady improvement, employment and prices ofgoods were generally stable, and the national economy was back ontrack gradually. In recent years, China has made significant effortsto develop its environmental protection industry. According to theNational Bureau of Statistics, investment in the water managementindustry increased by 5.2%2in 2023 compared to the same periodof last year. In January 2024, China’s Ministry of Ecology andEnvironment released a report on national surface water. Among the3,641 national surface water assessment sections, the proportionof sections with excellent water quality (Grade I~III) reached 89.4%3,representing an increase of 1.5% as compared to the same periodof last year. For the seven major river basins, Northwestern Rivers,Southwestern Rivers and rivers in Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces,the proportion of sections with excellent water quality (Grade I~III)reached 91.7%3, representing an increase of 1.5% as comparedto the same period of last year. This highlights that sewage andenvironmental issues improved in tandem with the recovery ofChina’s economy.
