The Policy Research Working Paper 10701 examines the impact of India's Pink Slip Program, which provided free bus transit for women, on women's time allocation and labor supply. The study finds that household expenditures on buses fall and women save time on travel. However, there is significant heterogeneity among women. Skilled employed women increase labor supply and reduce time on household chores, while low-skilled married women increase time on household activities and reduce labor supply. Unemployed women increase job search with no effect on employment. Overall, the findings suggest that gender roles within households can have a significant impact on women's time allocation and labor supply.
