This BIS Working Paper examines the impact of remote work on employment in Mexico's consumer services sector, which is a major employer of low-income workers. The authors use a triple difference event study design to compare employment in high and low proximity sectors across municipalities with different levels of remote work potential before and after the pandemic. The results suggest that larger shares of potential remote work are related to lower post-pandemic employment in high proximity consumer services. This finding has implications for policymakers looking to support low-income workers in the aftermath of the pandemic.
