This policy brief highlights the potential of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) in Mongolia to mitigate the effects of growing water demands that exceed natural recharge. Pilots supported by the Asian Development Bank, particularly the Baganuur project, have demonstrated the potential of MAR to enhance groundwater resources in Mongolia. However, several technical, financial, and institutional constraints need to be addressed to ensure successful MAR implementation. Recommendations include taking a structured approach to implementation, agreeing clear and aligned authorization processes across national and local levels of government, and developing the capacity of local experts in international MAR practices.
