For example, emerging approaches suchas environmental eDNA and artificial intelligence arebeing explored for their potential to generate faster andmore comprehensive datasets for the IUCN Red List ofThreatened Species™. Inclusivity and collaboration havealso been central to many initiatives, including IUCN’sWorld Heritage Outlook process, which has becomemore participatory by providing a space for IndigenousPeoples to share their knowledge and wisdom related tonatural sites. At the same time, IUCN has strengthenedits grant-making systems, policies and capacities tobetter support local conservation actors, while continuingto galvanise its Members’ voices on the global stage. 2025 was a critical year for IUCN, marking a newmandate and a turning point in our future as a Union. stewardship, translating science and global biodiversitygoals into measurable action on the ground. One of the year’s defining moments was the IUCN 2025World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi. Bringingtogether more than 10,000 participants from acrossIUCN’s Members, Commissions, governments, NGOs,businesses, Indigenous Peoples and partners, the 2025Congress was one of the largest in the Union’s history.Across a thousand sessions and dedicated summits forIndigenous Peoples, Business, Philanthropy and Youth, the Congress demonstrated the diversity, credibility andconvening power of our Union. Our Members establishednew policy directions and an ambitious global agenda, renewing a shared commitment to transformativeconservation in the years to come. We invite you to explore this report and join us incelebrating IUCN’s achievements. These pages reinforceour conviction that a nature-positive future can beachieved through the unified strength of governments, civil society, Indigenous Peoples and businesses as theyembrace IUCN’s collaborative spirit. Across land, water and ocean ecosystems, IUCN’son-the-ground initiatives have demonstrated tangibleimpact, proving that conservation works for people andthe planet. From restoring degraded landscapes andadvancing renewable energy to helping endangeredspecies bounce back from the brink of extinction, theseefforts are empowering local communities, strengtheninginstitutions and shifting exploitative economic modelstoward regenerative approaches. These successes provethat nature can and does recover if we allow it to do so. While 2025 continued to see environmental changeaccelerate rapidly, it marked a decisive milestone whenour Union delivered a plan that matches the scale ofthe challenge. IUCN’s new 20-year Strategic Visionand its 2026–2029 Programme, adopted at the 2025Congress, provide an ambitious yet pragmatic roadmapfor how the Union will respond to the triple planetarycrisis. More than strategy documents, they are ourcollective compass and our blueprint for action. Werecognise that the window for meaningful action isnarrowing, and these frameworks ensure that everyresource and expertise within our network is directedtoward the areas of greatest need. Finally, because change doesn’t happen in isolation, ourpartnerships showcase the true vibrancy of our Union. The support of IUCN’s Framework Partners has allowedthe Union to maintain its global convening role, investin institutional capacities and respond strategically toemerging conservation priorities. Meanwhile, IUCN hasstrengthened its engagement with the private sectorthrough a new generation of strategic partnerships.New collaborations advanced the first global peatlandecosystem assessment, piloted nature-positiveapproaches in complex industrial landscapes, supportedcoral reef restoration and transformed corporate water Grethel AguilarDirector General The past year has also shown there is reason foroptimism, despite increasingly complex globalchallenges. Through innovation, inclusion andeffectiveness, IUCN is leading by example in a newera of conservation efforts. The Union is combiningits core, traditional strengths, such as the rigorousmonitoring of the st
