India has demonstrated remarkable resilience and unwavering commit-ment in its pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this endeavour, our Statesand Union Territories have played an instrumental role, championing SDG initiatives andadvancing a robust localisation model that reaffirms our belief in both cooperative andcompetitive federalism. The States of the North-Eastern Region are central to SDG localisation, given their uniquegeography, rich cultural heritage, and intra-regional developmental disparities. Theircommendable efforts have led to the formulation of SDG-aligned vision documents, theestablishment of dedicated institutional frameworks, and the development of state-specificmonitoring systems—ensuring alignment with our broader localisation efforts. Message To accelerate SDG progress and promote holistic regional development, NITI Aayog, inpartnership with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and UNDP India,launched the first-ever District-level SDG Index for the region in 2021. This initiative, shapedthrough extensive consultation with all eight North-Eastern States, yielded invaluable insightsinto the challenges hindering progress, while also illuminating opportunities to advancesustainable development across the region. The positive reception of the 2021–2022 editionhas rightfully paved the way for this second iteration. The North Eastern Region District SDG Index marks a significant step forward in localisingthe global goals by translating them into region-specific targets and tracking progress atthe district level. Through data-driven governance, targeted interventions, and the facilita-tion of peer learning among districts, this Index empowers States to respond more effec-tively to local development priorities. These collaborative efforts stand as a testament toIndia’s unwavering commitment to deepening SDG localisation and accelerating progressthroughout the region. This initiative epitomises the spirit of cooperative federalism, bringing together the eightNorth-Eastern States, NITI Aayog, and MDoNER in a unified pursuit of sustainable andinclusive development. It also reflects the Honourable Prime Minister’s vision of SabkaSaath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas. The SDG framework requires effective mechanisms and decentralisation to solve environ-mental, social and economic challenges. Sub-national entities have utilised the SDG IndiaIndex Report & Dashboard to strengthen their statistical systems and policy formulation.In the true spirit of cooperative federalism, the Centre and States are working in unisonto realise the Agenda 2030. The first edition of the North East Region District SDG Indexand Dashboard has steered districts of the North East Region towards better monitoringof achievement of SDGs and this edition would encourage them further. Message The North Eastern Region is the country's most socially and ethnically diverse region,with each State having distinct traditions and cultures. This diversity is its strength andprovides many opportunities for sustainable development.
