The SIIPS report aimsto inform public‑sector and private‑sector playersin Africa and beyond about the developments in theinstant retail payment system (IPS) ecosystem inAfrica, including an assessment of the inclusivityof such systems, both in functionality (accessibletoall end users)and governance(all licensedpayment providers have fair access and design input opportunities). For this report, only systems with livetransactions and functionality as of June 2024 wereincluded. The authors gathered the data in this reportdirectly from central banks and public or public‑privateinstantpayment system operators in Africa andfrom publicly available resources between Januaryand June 2024. The findings also include insightsfromextensive stakeholder interviews conductedduring the same period. The consumer research wasconducted between February and March 2024. Indeed, over thelast decade, Africa has seen a dramatic increase inthe availability of digital payments. Since 2012, whenthere were just two instant payment systems on thecontinent, the infrastructure has grown to include 31systems processing digital payments for 26 countries. As a lifelong advocate for financial inclusion, I knowthe power of compelling stories to make the case forgiving people access to safe, secure, and affordablefinancial tools.
