Technology hasadvanced and companies have comeand gone. As always, the purpose is simple:understand the biggest and mostimportant things happening intelecoms and the broader TMTindustries, and explain what theymean for people, companies andgovernments. GLOBAL MOBILE TRENDS Executivesummary 5G’s next wave5G-AdvancedFixed wireless accessGenerative AICloud and edgeeSIMThe future of entertainmentSatellites and NTNsPrivate wireless networksSustainability and circularity Four cross-cutting themes Private wireless forall tastes Satellites and non-terrestrial networks(NTNs): win–win? Generative AI(genAI) and the artof the possible 5G enters a newwave, with newurgency At the end of 2022, 50% ofoperators surveyed claimed tohave private 4G, and 34% hadlaunched or were testing private5G. A year later, the 5G figurehad almost doubled to 64%. Thisreflects a response to enterprisedemand for customisedsolutions at or near theirpremises, alongside the ability toincorporate edge computing andIoT into service packages. The rapid rise of AI is the biggesttech story of the last year, withfar-reaching implications forcommerce, employment andsecurity. Telco forays into AI havestarted with internal priorities(e.g. troubleshooting networkfaults). This is pragmatic but onlyscratches the surface. Satellites have quietly moved intothe mainstream since 2016 whenSpaceX’s original LEO constellationproposals were made. 2023 was aturning point, driven by improvedeconomics, capacity gains and theenshrining of NTN standards into5G new radio (3GPP). 5G adoption is edging towards20% globally, up 7 percentagepoints (pp) over the last 12months. This is positive news, given the tariff upsell potentialfrom the transition from 4G, withplenty of room to move into. However, the rise in 5G has notmaterially altered mobile revenuegrowth, which stands stubbornlylow. Economic weakness hasplayed its part, but a biggerissue is that price premiumsare eventually competed awayin the absence of a ‘killer app’that people will pay more for.Meanwhile, the B2B story isstill developing around privatewireless networks, edge andIoT. B2B remains a focus for theindustry, with the launch of thenext iteration of 5G networksan important underpinning forgrowth over the next three years. Satellite provides telcos with a routeto reach revenues not previouslypossible; GSMA Intelligenceestimates an annual run rate of$30–35 billion by 2035, equivalentto a boost of 2.0–2.5% to the currentmobile revenue base. It also impliesa closing of the coverage gap (stillat 7% of the global population) andinternet divide. 2024 is likely to see genAIsupporting growth throughsmarter services and marketing.Data monetisation, in particular, deserves more attention, withproducts such as AWS TelcoData Lake provin
