Integrating Patient Awareness of Evidence-Based Care,Engagement in Key Decision-Making Points, andShared Decision-Making SEPTEMBER2 0 2 5 Introduction With cancer treatment evolving rapidly through medical advances, the value ofpatient-centered care is being increasingly recognized — not only in academicliterature, but also in clinical practice — by patients, patient advocacy groups, andthe broader healthcare ecosystem. Despite this growing awareness, achievingthis type of care remains a challenge, with several barriers preventing theoptimal involvement of patients in their cancer care journey. This report examinesthree key elements of patient-centered care and proposes actionable strategiesto the current barriers, ultimately aiming to enhance patient engagement andimprove clinical outcomes. Each chapter in the report assesses the current statusof these elements raising patient awareness ofpatient-facing clinical guidelines, engaging patients andcaregivers at pivotal decision-making points along thecare pathway, and empowering shared decision-making.Each of these areas offer opportunities for enhancingpatient health. These chapters also lay out the impactof the suboptimal status of these elements and proposerecommendations to improve the existing situationbased on expert input. However, despitegrowing evidence of the importance of these elements, and of incorporating patient voices into care decisions, several barriers persist, preventing meaningfulengagement and optimal care output. Experts from the roundtable highlighted that thereare moments along the cancer care continuum wheremore active conversation between patients and theirhealthcare systems is needed. These moments require athoughtful approach that fosters self-advocacy withoutoverwhelming patients with information. Additionalresearch conducted by IQVIA highlights that patientswant to be active participants in their care. However, involving patients and caregivers in key decisionsalong the care pathway can be challenging. The lackof patient and caregiver involvement can result inoverlooked decision points and patient concerns, missed opportunities for timely intervention, increasedfinancial burden, anxiety and lower quality of life, andfragmented care pathways. An analysis of patient-provider communication andexpert perspectives from a patient advocate roundtablehighlight a significant gap in patients’ and caregivers’awareness of patient-facing clinical guidelines, eventhough healthcare professionals (HCPs) commonlyuse guidelines to inform their recommendations andtreatment decisions. Based on the analysis of patientmessages and questions from the Outcomes4Me data, specific mentions by patients of patient-facing treatmentguidelines, even among this engaged population, weregenerally absent. This lack of understanding can lead tomisalignment on treatment goals resulting in increasedhealthcare cost and economic burden, prevention ofinformed discussions with HCPs, and the potential f
