USA | Aerospace & Defense Electronics What's Up in Space: SATCOM, X-37B,Broadband, Lunar In this weekly report, we highlight key events and implications for the spacesector: 1) Space Force awards five PTS-G contracts with downselect in 2026; 2)Boeing gearing up for eighth X-37B mission to space; 3) MDA Space selected byEchoStar for LEO broadband constellation with $1.3BB initial award; 4) ThalesAlenia Space receives Human Lunar Outpost design contract from Italian SpaceAgency. Space Force Awards Five SATCOM Contracts.Space Force awarded $38MM ($4BB ID/IQ ceiling)to Viasat, Northrop Grumman, Astranis, Intelsat (SES) and Boeing to demonstrate capabilities basedon their commercial product lines for Protected Tactical Satellite Communications - Global. PTS-G is a constellation of small sats in GEO that would provide secure comms w/ anti-jammingcapabilities. A winning bidder is expected to be selected in 2026 to manufacture and test four spacevehicles (two Ka-band / two X-band). Launches are planned for 2028 with a second round of satellitecontracts expected in 2028 for 2031 launch with a target of 12 satellites in total. The broader PTS-G program is expected to serve a medium assurance capability role for SATCOM, between the gapof other capabilities. Boeing X-37B Slated For Eighth Mission August 21st.The Boeing built X-37B Orbital Test Vehicleis preparing to launch its eighth mission no earlier than August 21st. This comes less than sixmonths after the successful completion of the OTV-7 mission. The OTV-8 flight is expected to flywith a service module, expanding capacity for experiments and partners including the AFRL andDIU. The mission will host a demonstration of high-bandwidth inter-satellite laser communicationstechnologies along with the highest performing quantum inertial sensor ever tested in space. Inaggregate since the inaugural launch in April 2010, the spaceplane has spent >4,200 days in space. MDA Selected by EchoStar for Broadband Constellation.EchoStar has selected MDA Spaceas the prime contractor for its new non-terrestrial network low Earth orbit direct-to-devicesatellite constellation. The initial contract is valued at $1.3BB (C$1.8BB) and includes the design, manufacturing and testing of the first tranche of over 100 software-defined MDA AURORA D2Dsatellites. The full initial configuration of the system consists of 200 satellites with future growth tothousands as demand requires. EchoStar's LEO constellation is expected to provide global talk, textand broadband services directly to standard 5G NTN handheld devices. The delivery of satellites isplanned for 2028 w/commercial service in 2029 and the total LEO project estimated to cost $5BB. Thales Alenia Receives Human Lunar Outpost Design Contract. The Italian Space Agency hasawarded Thales Alenia Space (Thales/Leonardo) a contract to design a lunar outpost for launch in2033. The Multi-Purpose Habitation module will be part of NASA's Artemis Moon mission with thepressurized outpost designed for 10 years of operations. The module will accommodate astronautsspending time on the Moon to conduct scientific research, along with a design that supports lunarmobility. The update includesa new wider frequency algorithm to distinguish individual emitters, incorporates GPS spoofingdetection and is terrain adjusted for better geolocation accuracy. The upgraded product offers Kyle Wenclawiak * | Equity Associate+1 (212) 323-7671 | kwenclawiak@jefferies.com accuracy, coverage and insight into global GPS jamming and spoofing threats and more secureoperations in GPS-denied or disrupted environments. MDA Space Selected For Canada's Lunar Utility Vehicle Study.MDA Space, Canadensys AerospaceCorporation and Mission Control were awarded $11MM in total by the Canadian Space Agency toconduct an early phase study for Canada's proposed Lunar Utility Vehicle over the next 18 months.MDA Space will integrate its MDA SKYMAKER, a full suite of scalable and modular space robotics. The initial phase will define the LUV mission concept and technology development plan with a focuson mission architecture, technology options and risk assessments. This is part of a 13 year C$1.2BBprogram Canada announced in 2023 to develop a utility rover to support human exploration of themoon. The program being led by Canada requires at least 60% domestic content initially w/80% inlater phases. The rover will be a contribution to the U.S. Artemis programs in exchange for seats onfuture missions.
