Discover how SoftServe successfully delivered web and mobile applicationlocalization in five languages despite hardcoded strings and a tight deadline. The Client Our client is a US-based online directdelivery company for food, groceries,alcohol, home essentials, third-partyorders, and more. They have over 10,000employees who work across more than1,000 micro-fulfillment centers. The next challenge was the extensive andvaried amounts of information requiringlocalization into five separate languages.This not only required localizing thecustomer facing application for onlineorder processing, but it also requiredlocalizing the supporting apps for orderinventory, scheduling, drivers, the website,Android and iOS frameworks, email, SMSnotifications, award and discount policies,and more. The Business Case Our client wanted to expand theirbusiness and services across Canadaand Europe. That’s why they soughtout a partner that could quickly localizetheir applications into German, French,Spanish, and UK and Canadian English. Lastly, the client, the localization team, andthe translators were spread across differenttime zones, so collaboration was moredifficult. The Solution The Challenges When the SoftServe team begantheir discovery, they uncovered afew challenges facing their team. SoftServe has experience with tightdeadlines and seemingly impossibletasks. After the two-week discoveryperiod, our team built a solid workflow thatsuccessfully delivered the localization ourclient needed within their timeline. First, the client’s aggressive deadlines andrequired live release roadmap alignmentmeant an extremely fast turnaround. Withhardcoded localization strings, our teamwas unable to see the full project scopeor estimate the time it might take. Yet, ourclient’s deadline was definitive with theSoftServe team having only two months totake this project from start to finish. Typically, a localization project’s workflowwould start with the localization teamreceiving the strings which they wouldthen share with the translation vendorto be translated. Next, the localizationteam would get back the translations fromthe vendor, review them, and deliver thetranslated strings for implementation. However, this project’s hardcoded stringsand tight turnaround time required adifferent workflow. First, hardcodedstrings meant our development team hadto manually extract them from the app,with our localization team then providingthe German translation while the vendorscovered the other languages. Despite the challenges, the translationswere delivered within the deadlines. TheSoftServe QA team then continuouslytested both the translations and processflows, fixing any translation-related bugsbefore integration. Once thoroughly testedand integrated, the localized applicationsand services were launched. As the vendor had engaged nativespeakers, there were significant timedifferences between translators. Thismeant it was essential these translatorsreceived the strings ASAP in order to meetthe deadline. In addition, this projectinvolved continuous localization, meaningnew strings were coming in at all hoursof the day and night while translating wasongoing. The Outcome With SoftServe successfully deliveringlocalized apps in five differentlanguages, our client was able tomeet their launch deadlines and businessgoals. SoftServe also internationalizedthe previously hardcoded strings so thatany future localization projects would besignificantly faster and easier. Now that ourclient has expanded across Canada andEurope, they are poised for further financialand structural growth. Thankfully, the use of a localization toolmade file management significantly easier.The process was further streamlined byhaving automatic translation memory,where commonly used words or phraseswould be stored so they didn’t requiretranslation each time.
