OVERVIEW The company, formed through mergers andacquisitions over many years, is privatelyheld and provides an integrated platform.This platform allows marketers to accessall aspects of their marketing programs inone place, making it easy to roll out eventhe most complex and personalized userexperiences. Its customers span leadingbrands across several continents. Marketing technology, or martech,is one of the fastest growingsegments in the software sector.But martech is also highlycompetitive. Today, there are nearly10,000 vendors worldwide and anannual growth of 24% since 2020,according to CDP.com. Setting out to improvecompetitiveness in thisenvironment, one of the world’slargest martech companies lookedto increase the profitability ofits products and platforms. Thecompany partnered with its long-term software services provider,SoftServe, to optimize the efficiencyand effectiveness of its AmazonWeb Services (AWS) Cloud servicesusage. The goal was to lower costsand deliver a greater ability to scaleas its business grows. SOLUTION CHALLENGE Following a series of mergers and acquisitionsthat turned SoftServe’s client into a marketleader, the company needed to position itselffor cost-effective growth. It also needed toensure its existing systems were properlymaintained and supported current operations.Its digital marketing platform — the core of thebusiness — runs on AWS. The client and SoftServe developed a strategyto optimize the efficiency and effectivenessof its AWS Cloud services usage. SoftServestarted with an architecture assessment andbilling data analysis to reveal how its cloudusage can improve. To achieve these goals and upgrades,in February 2021, SoftServe offered acreative, value-based digital analytics AWSCloud cost savings proposal. The proposalincluded automation testing, CI/CD PoC andimprovements, Oracle-to-Snowflake migration,MQ to SQS migration, Terraform and DevOpsoptimization, application re-architecture andmodernization, and cloud-native solutions. The client wanted to shift from cloud resourceprovisioning based on anticipated needs to anauto-scaling model that adapts dynamically,and provisions cloud resources based onactual demand. This approach would help theclient achieve operational excellenceand optimal cost performance. This method saved money and allowed theclient to optimize performance. This resulted ingreater efficiency, which, in turn, reduced thecost of goods sold in support of the company’sambitious growth agenda. PLANNING This cloud optimization initiative gave rise toother important projects, such as: A collaborative, multidisciplinary team (DevOps, senior software engineers,big data architects, and solution architects) of both the client and SoftServelaunched the initiative, including: •Analysis of billing data fromAWS Cost Explorer, monitoringdata from AWS CloudWatch,and Grafana trends and spikes. •Analysis of data flow byexperts from Big Data Group. MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT •Analysis of the client’sapplication business goalsand metrics (e.g., “generatingand selling a report to theirclient”) and coming up with aSoftServe reward model as afunction of optimized dollarscost per report. •Drill-down and analysis of topspending categories and waysto optimize them. UI/UX MODERNIZATION •Architecture assessment witha quality attribute workshopusing the architecture tradeoffanalysis method to identifypossible redesign approachesthat can optimize costs. CONTINUOUS INTEGRATIONAND CONTINUOUS DELIVERYMODERNIZATION •Preparation of a discoveryreport with a prioritizedlist of cost-saving initiatives(resizing, enabling auto-scaling,re-architecting), high-levelimplementation plan,and estimated savingsamounts with plus or minus5% accuracy. •Application of AWSWell-Architected Frameworkprinciples to ensureoptimal spending. AUTOMATED TESTINGMODERNIZATION TO MANAGE THEMIGRATION TO GOOGLE LOOKER •Analysis of wastedKubernetes resourcesusing the automatic toolset. DATA PLATFORM AND DATA-LAKEMODERNIZATION RESULTS By improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its AWS usage, the clienthas saved between $200,000 to $300,000 per month since January 2022and achieved an ROI of 297%. The company also continues to improve itsinfrastructure and cloud management.
