The metaverse, with its interactive capabilities, holds immense potential for institutions, brands, and companies, especially as spatial computing becomes mainstream. The World Economic Forum (WEF), in partnership with Accenture and Microsoft, is developing the Global Collaboration Village, a purpose-driven platform for public-private cooperation, to leverage metaverse technologies for enhancing human interaction, fostering empathy, and driving impactful solutions to global challenges.
The Village aims to provide a digital space where leaders, influencers, and changemakers can collaborate and take action against pressing issues, such as climate change. The concept, initially sketched by Professor Klaus Schwab, envisions a virtual world with collaborative centers and campuses for business, government, civil society, science, and entertainment.
Accenture assembled a multidisciplinary team to bring this vision to life, demonstrating the potential of the metaverse through a proof of concept featuring sustainability themes, including the WEF's 1 Trillion Trees initiative. This proof of concept was showcased at the Annual Meeting 2022, leading to the green light for further development, including the Business Stakeholder Campus and an Ocean Hub.
At the Annual Meeting 2023, attendees experienced the Ocean Hub, an immersive undersea world created in collaboration with the WEF's Ocean Action Council. This experience highlighted the connections between human and ocean health and underscored the importance of urgent climate action. Leaders praised the metaverse for bringing ocean causes to life and fostering interpersonal connections.
The WEF envisions the Village as a universal platform for problem-solvers, offering opportunities for cultural events, conferences, virtual art exhibits, and more. The goal is to democratize access to impactful solutions, making them available to anyone, anywhere, anytime. The Village is also expected to host generative AI-driven experiences, such as scenario planning for business leaders and tailored advice from industry experts.
To date, 130 organizations have joined as Village Partners, meeting bi-monthly to advance this effort. A working group has also been convened to address trust, security, identity, safety, and governance in the metaverse, aiming to formalize a universal code of ethics for this new frontier.
While the Village is not a panacea for real-world challenges, it is designed as a catalyst for meaningful collaboration and innovation. By providing a platform for sustained interaction and problem-solving, the WEF believes the Village can help drive significant progress in addressing global challenges.
