Concrete is essential to this rapid rateof urbanization and population growth, ensuringthat everyone has access to vital infrastructure, including housing, roads, hospitals and schools. But getting the materials to produce cement andconcrete is putting increased pressure on our planetand its natural resources. Today, the resourcessociety is using are equivalent to that of 1.75 Earthsand 1 million species are at risk of extinction.3Governments and industries are increasinglyrealizing that addressing nature and biodiversityconcerns also addresses climate change mitigationand adaptation priorities. Nature is the new climateand the business case for integrated action acrossclimate and nature has never been clearer. Our sector’s activities are impacting the ecosystemsthat we and all other species depend on. That’swhy we need transformational change by all actors– and we need it now. Business is fundamental toachieving the change needed. With its enormouseconomic power and environmental impact, business can lead the way – pushing for theoutcomes people and the planet need.Although cement and concrete companies arequickly recognizing and minimizing their heavyreliance on natural resources, we as a sectorurgently need to do more.Nollaig ForrestChief Sustainability Officer,Holcim As leaders in this sector, it is down to us to ensurebold and visionary action to achieve a net-zero,circular and nature-positive future. At Holcim, wehave made ambitious commitments to nature forfreshwater use and biodiversity. For example, wehave committed to a 33% reduction in freshwaterwithdrawal per tonne of cement produced and to ameasurable positive impact on biodiversity by 2030.No one company can do this alone. Our collectiveactions, coupled with regulation in some countries, are leading to positive shifts. But as we increaseour efforts to help meet the goals and targets of theKunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework,we can and must do more to embrace newtechnologies and ways of doing business. This report clearly defines the priority actionsour sector must take to embrace sustainablepractices, from reducing greenhouse gases andcurbing freshwater use to stepping up rehabilitationapproaches and biodiversity management andexpanding circularity efforts across the value chain. The transition to a nature-positive future alsopresents us with commercial opportunities, suchas recycled concrete elements and structures. With the right policies and financing incentives, thesector is positioned to capture the full potential of anew circular and regenerative business model.By prioritizing the action
