Renewable energy investments in the regionhave surged, growing at an impressive annual rate of 34% since 2004. This investment trend ismirrored in countries’ generation capacities, with China leading the region in renewable energyproduction, followed by India. By 2030, renewables are expected to comprise 30% to 50% of thepower generation mix in most markets across Asia Pacific. Renewable electricity generation Currently, renewable sources contribute to about 32% of electricity generation in the region.Hydropower remains the leading source of renewable electricity, followed by wind and solar.However, the renewable electricity generation mix varies significantly across the region due toits vast size and diversity: Philippines China In2023,clean power made up 35%ofChina’selectricitymix,includinghydropower at 13%, and wind and solarpower at 16%. About 20% of the Philippines’ electricity isgenerated from renewable sources, withthe majority coming from hydropower andgeothermal sources. Viet Nam generated 52% of its electricityfrom renewable sources in 2021. It is thesole country in Southeast Asia where windenergy ranks among the top three renewableelectricitygeneration sources aside fromhydro and solar. Renewable sources make up approximately22.3%of Japan's electricity generation.As of 2023, Japan's renewable electricitymix is largely composed of solar power,accountingfor around 10.7%of totalelectricity generation, with hydropower at7.8% and wind power at 1.2%. Renewable Energy:Regulatory Updates To facilitate the transition to a low-carbon future, countries across the regionhave announced new regulations and initiatives to increase the capacity ofrenewable electricity and encourage corporates to adopt clean energy. Thesemeasures aim to accelerate decarbonization efforts while fostering innova-tion in sustainable energy solutions. CHINA: LAUNCH OF THE NEW RENEWABLE ENERGY PLAN In October 2024, the Chinese government launched a new renewable energy planto accelerate renewable energy consumption. Issued by the National Developmentand Reform Commission (NDRC) and five other agencies, it marks a shift from ex-panding renewable energy capacity to creating demand for consumption. This willbe done by adopting a multi-pronged approach that involves developing new large-scale infrastructure, establishing system regulations and incentivizing active partic-ipation in the electricity market. THAILAND AND VIET NAM: EVOLUTION OF ELECTRICITYRETAIL MARKETS Electricity retail markets across Southeast Asia experienced major developmentsin 2024. The liberalization of the electricity retail segment has resulted in more op-tions for corporates. For example, Thailand recently introduced a pilot direct powerpurchase agreement (PPA) program to provide data centers with greater access torenewable electricity. In Malaysia, the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme(CRESS) was launched to enable large corporate consumers to procure renewableenergy directly from independent power producers. SINGAPORE: BUILDING REGIONAL RENEWABLEELECTRICITY SUPPLY Countries are working on cross-border electricity trading to strengthen regional re-newable energy supply and stability. Singapore is partnering with governments andindustry partners to establish a credible framework for recognizing cross-border En-ergy Attribute Certificates (EACs). Establishing a reliable cross-border EAC frame-work is expected to drive demand for regional renewable electricity projects, therebyenhancing the long-term viability of renewable energy across the region. Renewable Energy:CorporateDecarbonization Trends Rising Participation in Corporate Sustainability Initiatives RE100 CorporatesustainabilityinitiativeslikeRE100andtheScience-based TargetsInitiative(SBTi)empowercompanies to set and achievetargetsrelated to emissionreductionandrenewableelectricityprocurement.AcrossAsiaPacific,participation intheseinitiatives has surged,reflectinggrowing ambitionand demand for clean energyin the region. 75% of new RE100 members are headquartered in Asia Pacific.
