It empowers individuals andenterprises with a wide array of transformativetechnologies while also aiding governments indelivering positive societal impacts. However, the usage gap remains: 3 billion peoplelive in areas covered by mobile broadbandnetworks but do not use mobile internet.Addressing the usage gap is crucial to closingthe digital divide, thereby unlocking thebenefits of life-enhancing applications beyondcommunication, including digital finance, healthand clean energy. By the end of 2023, 5.6 billion people (69% of theglobal population) subscribed to a mobile service, representing an increase of 1.6 billion people since2015. Growth in mobile internet penetration hasbeen even faster. At the end of 2023, 58% of theworld’s population used mobile internet, equatingto 4.7 billion users – an increase of 2.1 billion since2015. The impact of mobile connectivity is evidenced byits contribution to the economy. In 2023, mobiletechnologies and services generated 5.4% ofglobal GDP, a contribution that amounted to $5.7trillion of economic value added, and supportedaround 35 million jobs. Key trends shaping themobile ecosystem 5G standalone and 5G-Advanced arethe next phase The mobile industry is increasingly moving to the5G standalone (SA) and 5G-Advanced standardsto unlock innovative 5G use cases and createnew revenue streams. As of January 2024, 47operators offered commercial 5G services onSA networks, while more than half of operatorsexpect to deploy 5G-Advanced within a yearafter standards are released. Increased 5G SAand 5G-Advanced activities in 2024 will kick-start a new round of 5G investment, especially inpioneer markets. This has the potential to openup a wealth of opportunities to enable enhancedfunctionality and use cases for the enterprisemarket. Network API initiatives gain traction Although it has been possible to expose networkAPIs for a while, operators have struggled toadopt a standardised approach that achievesscale. However, recent efforts by the mobileindustry to develop a common set of networkAPIs have provided new momentum to operatorinitiatives. The ultimate goal of network APIexposure is to better monetise network assetsand capabilities. While working with externaldeveloper teams to achieve this goal receivesthe most attention, the exposure of networkcapabilities via APIs should also assist internalteams within operators in creating new services.
