The firm’s structural and civilengineers tackled a range of challenges ofthis scheme, notably the sandy and unstablesoil conditions. Manchester Airport City, UK Arup guided the decision-making processto ensure the success of this high-profileproject – a joint development by ManchesterAirport Group, Carillion, Beijing ConstructionEngineering Group and the Greater ManchesterPension Fund. In partnership with Greenland Group, Arup’sstructural, mechanical and specialist serviceswere called upon to deliver the innovativeengineering approaches needed to makethis project a reality. We started working in mainland China in 1984, and in 1995 we formally established alocal office in Shenzhen. Today, some 800 projects later, our reach extends to Shanghai,Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Wuhan, with more than 600 staff acrossthe country.
