Avanade, a Microsoft professional services organization, was one of the first companies to fully deploy Windows 8 by leveraging a customized cloud-based software download tool and a low touch implementation approach. As a rapidly growing company with a global footprint, it was important to make the move to the new operating system as seamless as possible. Traditional OS upgrades often involve lines of users at local technical support desks, CDs and USB drives being shipped around the world, and loaner laptops. However, with a widely distributed network of employees, most of whom are rarely in Avanade offices, there was a clear need to simplify the process for the end-users. The Avanade ITS Workstation team used Microsoft Azure as a Platform as a Service (PaaS) to build a self-service, low touch upgrade process using the myPC software download solution. This approach provided many benefits, including improved performance, reduced costs, and minimal impact on the rest of the Avanade network.
