Led by inbound tourism andprivate consumption, the Hong Kong economy continued to recoverin the second quarter of 2023.According to the Government ofHong Kong (the “Government”), the real GDP of Hong Konggrew by 1.5% from a year earlier, having increased by 2.9% in thepreceding quarter. However the outbreak of COVID-19 has completelyreshaped the construction industry and brought along continuousconsequences. In particular, shortage of construction-relatedprofessions resulting in continuous difficulty in recruiting sufficientconstruction staff to commence new construction projects.According to the “Manpower Forecast for Hong Kong ConstructionIndustry (February 2023)” published by the Construction IndustryCouncil, the Construction Instruction has a shortage of 17,500 to24,000 workers and professionals, and the number is expected toincreased to 48,500 to 55,000 in 2027. 本公司本集團董事12,000 Despite the aforementioned difficulties, the directors (the“Directors”) of Kwong Luen Engineering Holdings Limited (the“Company”, together with its subsidiaries, the “Group”) expectthat there are upsides to the industry. In June 2023, the Governmentof Hong Kong proposed to import workers to alleviate the labourcrunch in various industries, including the construction industry.The construction industry may hire up to 12,000 non-local workers,which the Government aims to ease manpower shortfalls in theshort term.
