IP, and the roleit plays in driving innovation and creativity forward, is not only a powerful force for lifting uppeople, businesses and communities around the world, it is also a vehicle for turning dreams andaspirations into reality. It is therefore critical that IP knowledge and skills are available to all. The WIPO Academy is theworld leader in providing IP training and education courses, with a special focus on participantsfrom developing countries, least-developed countries and countries in transition. The WIPOAcademy has a proud tradition of reaching people the world over, welcoming its one-millionthparticipant in 2021. At a time when innovation and creativity are becoming more open, more global and movingfaster, IP can no longer remain just a technical vertical of interest only to IP specialists. It mustbecome a powerful catalyst for jobs, investments, business growth and, ultimately, economic andsocial development in all parts of the world. This is why WIPO is working to build a more inclusiveIP ecosystem. One that connects not just with IP experts, but also with creators, innovators,entrepreneurs, startups, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), researchers, artists, indigenouspeoples and others. The WIPO Academy is key to this vision. Over 70 percent of beneficiaries of the Academy’s IPskills-building courses are from developing countries and 54 percent are women. Since the launch of our Medium Term Strategic Plan in June 2021, our course program has evolvedsignificantly, going beyond transfers of technical IP knowledge to place strong emphasis on thebuilding of practical IP skills. To give just a snapshot: new WIPO Academy courses on IP and exports, tourism and sports aresupporting the use of IP as a tool for business strategy in even more sectors of the economy. Wepiloted IP youth camps to raise IP awareness among future innovators and creators in Jordan.The Academy is leveraging its ever-growing network of IP Training Institutions (IPTIs) to scale upthe delivery of tailored skills-building courses for women and entrepreneurs, including in criticalareas such as COVID-19 economic recovery. To match the evolving needs of the IP landscape,new WIPO Joint Master’s Degree Programs focusing on entrepreneurship, innovation and IPmanagement are underway in the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. Building on this, our 2023 Portfolio provides a rich array of general and more advanced IPskills-building courses and programs. It reflects our focus on empowering innovators andcreators by equipping them with the practical IP skills that they need to move their ideas orbusinesses forward. Daren TangDirector General Preface The year 2023 will be one of transformation in the work of the WIPO Academy. Whilecontinuing implementation of its primary mandate to facilitate global access to intellectualproperty (IP) capacity-building, particularly in developing countries, least-developed countriesand countries in transition. It will also target new beneficiaries, in particular from the privatesector, and will increase its focus on skills development and IP commercialization. The 2023 edition of theWIPO Academy Portfolio of Education, Training and Skills DevelopmentProgramsoffers a wide range of courses covering fundamental and multidisciplinary aspectsof IP in a variety of formats and languages. Courses range from basic and advanced distancelearning (DL), to specialized, professional development training for government officials, andto higher education through Joint Master’s Degree Programs in IP at renowned universities.Course curricula have been reviewed to increase the focus on IP skills-building, as well as inareas such as IP commercialization. The portfolio also includes dedicated courses addressedto entrepreneurs, exporters, researchers, inventors and IP managers, designed to providethem with the technical knowledge and skills needed to use the IP system to support businessgrowth and job creation. The courses are delivered in close cooperation with partner institutions and with external,independent academic expertise. The Academy has a strong reputation which rests uponthe diversity of its course offerings, quality of instruction, its credibility as a neutral andimpartial source of knowledge, and its extensive international network of highly respectedpartner institutions.
