The year commenced with the onset of the fifth wave of local novel coronavirus (“COVID-19”) outbreaks, which had a severe impact on domestic consumption and investor sentiment. Although the domestic situation gradually ameliorated with the cessation of COVID-19-related restrictions, it was soon overshadowed by deteriorating external conditions and tightening financial circumstances. Consequently, Hong Kong’s real GDP contracted by 3.5% throughout 2022.The construction industry in Hong Kong faced notable challenges throughout the year. Local COVID-19 restrictions remained a substantial impediment, significantly hampering industry operations and progress. These restrictions disrupted construction projects, leading to delays and escalated costs. Despite these adversities, the industry exhibited resilience by adapting to new protocols and implementing measures to ensure the welfare of workers as well as the continuation of projects.Entering 2023, Hong Kong’s construction industry is primed for recovery.
