Making additional spectrum availablefor comiercial use will help meet the growing demand for mobile broadband services, fuel theinvestment that has made the United States the world leader in wireless innovation, and createjobs. The U.S. government is the single largest spectrum user in the country. Finding moreefficient ways for the goverment to use this valuable public asset without compromising criticalobjectives would not only produce dividends for govermnent agencies, but also inject additionalresources into the private sector to spur our economy. To that end, the Subcommittee hascrganized a bipartisan working group to take a closer look at government spectrum use. We therefore ask that you please provide in writing the following information necessaryforourexamination. 1, The number of spectrun authorizations each Federal user held in 2011, including theactivities, capabilities, functions, or missions supported by the authorizations and whetherthey are space-based, air-based, or ground-based, broken down in frequency ranges from300MHz to 3GHz, 1755MHz to 1850MHz,and 1755MHz to 1780MHz. 2. The amount of spectrum assigned to each Federal user, broken down in frequency rangesfrom 300 MHz to 3GHz, 1755 MHz to 1850 MHz; and 1755 MHz to 1780 MHz. In youranswer, please explain in detail any adjustments you make to account for the temporaland shared naturc of some govermment spectrum use. Letter to the Honorable Lawrence StricklingPage 2 In the event that you determine that any of the inforrmation requested is classified orotherwise sensitive to national security, the working group asks that you provide a classifiedappendix for review by Members and staff with sufficient clearance. We look forward to your responses. Please contact in advance Neil Fried, RogerSherman, David Redl and David Grossnan on the Conmmittee staff at (202) 225-2927 to discussthe content, format, and timing of your response.
