Startup Amsterdamfacilitates programs and connections that help founders build andscale their companies in the city. Foreword The potential is clearly there. But it requires more collaboration across ourown innovation districts and research networks, and a more concertedeffort to help our best companies scale. Amsterdam has long been a city where science, commerce, and creativityconverge. That combination has produced world-class universities, pioneering research institutes, and a startup ecosystem that consistentlypunches above its weight. Yet we do not always tell that story wellenough. From the invention of Python to pioneering work in quantumalgorithms, from ASML's collaboration with the University of Amsterdamthrough ARCNL to a growing community of more than 120 deep techcompanies,Amsterdam has quietly built capabilities that compete ona global stage in several areas. This is also an invitation to other Dutch innovation hubs, to the nationalgovernment, and to European cities and regions to work more closelytogether. We hope this report serves as a foundation for a sharper conversation withfounders, investors, researchers, policymakers, and partners about whatdeep tech in Amsterdam is, what it adds to the European ecosystem, andwhere it should be heading towards. This is the first time we have mapped Amsterdam's deep tech ecosystemin this way, identifying where the city genuinely competes at the highestlevel. Three pillars emerge: Future of Compute, anchored in quantumalgorithms and AI; Future of Life Sciences, built on decades of red biotechand medtech expertise; and Future of Sustainable Systems, where greenchemistry, new materials, and carbon capture are emerging as areas ofstrength. What this report also shows is that our key competences, takentogether, unlock something more than the sum of their parts. AI inhealthcareis an early and promising example of what thosecombinations can produce, and there are more to come.
