For NewZealand, embracing AI is not merely an option,it is essential for maintaining our competitiveness, attracting global talent, anddelivering the productivity gains our economy needs to thrive. The Government’s flagship economicapproach,Going for Growth,recognises thetransformative potential of AI. This strategyoutlines the Government’s commitment tocreating an environment where NewZealandbusinesses can adopt and innovate with AItechnologies with confidence. We are signallingour unwavering support for private sectorinvestment in AI. The economic potential isextraordinary; industry research suggests thatadopting generative AI alone could add $76billion to the NewZealand economy by 2038, orover 15% of our GDP (Microsoft, 2024). This strategy complements the work beingundertaken by Hon Judith Collins KC, Ministerfor Digitising Government, who is drivingadoption of AI within the public sector. Together, these initiatives will positionNewZealand as a leader in responsible AIadoption, demonstrating effective use of thistransformative technology by a small, advancedeconomy. The Government aims to encourage investmentin AI adoption by reducing uncertainty,removing unintended and unwanted barriersto AI in legislation, and providing clearguidance on responsible AI innovation withinNewZealand’s existing legal framework. Thisstrategy confirms NewZealand’s adoption ofthe OECD’s AI Principles, aligning our approachwith international best practice and confirmsNewZealand’s commitment to innovation,transparency, and human rights. Until now, NewZealand was the only OECDcountry that had not published an AI strategy,and most NewZealand organisations are stillearly in their exploration and adoption of AI.
