Building on the recovery we saw last year, our Q1 InnovationUpdate, produced in partnership with Dealroom, shows a market that isnot only rebounding, but accelerating – underpinned by strong investorconviction and a new wave of globally significant companies, evenagainst a more complex global backdrop. “In Q1 2026, UK innovation businesses raised $7.8 billion in venture capital, marking a 60%year-on-year increase and the strongest start to a year since 2022. This growth reflects amaturing and resilient ecosystem, with capital increasingly flowing to companies demonstratingboth technical leadership and commercial traction. Artificial intelligence continues to sit firmly at the centre of this story. UK AI startups raised $5.8billion in the first quarter alone – equivalent to 74% of all venture capital invested. This is notsimply a surge in interest, but a sign that AI is becoming foundational across sectors, frominfrastructure through to applied use cases in industry, media and mobility. We are also seeing growing confidence at scale, with investors backing companies with thepotential to become global technology leaders. This is reflected in the quarterʼs largest raises, led by AI innovators such as Nscale ($2 billion in hosting infrastructure), Wayve ($1.2 billion inautonomous mobility), and ElevenLabs ($500 million in AI-powered media). These trends reinforce the UKʼs position as Europeʼs leading innovation hub. The countrycontinues to attract more venture capital than any of its peers and is producing world-classoutcomes in AI, talent and company creation. Just as importantly, we are seeing the continueddevelopment of a strong founder flywheel, with experienced entrepreneurs building andbacking the next generation of businesses. The next phase of UK innovation will be defined not just by scale, but by sustained execution –turning technical breakthroughs into enduring global companies. At HSBC Innovation Banking,we are proud to support the founders and investors driving this progress, and to play our part inenabling the UKʼs innovation economy to continue to grow with confidence.” 1UK tech in Q1 2026 2AI spotlight UK venturecapital hit $7.8Bin Q1 2026, itshighest openingquarter in fouryears Investment activityaccelerated, continuing anupward trend from 2025, withfunding up $2.9Byear-on-year (60%).
