Faced with recordinvestment levels and buzz around new companies and teams,it’s easy to forget that AI has been around for decades. Around 2011, we started to see early efforts to aggregate data atscale in order to extract value from it. This led to the rapid progressin machine learning from 2014 through to 2018/19 and we’re nowin the new wave of AI, shifting from being predictive to generative.The Accel team believes the new models now being developed willunderpin a transformation as significant as the shift to cloud andmobile, and form a part of every piece of software being written. Although an emerging frontier of AI, GenAI startups are alreadyattracting record levels of investment. In 2023, GenAI startupsglobally secured more than $25B in funding and 2024 fundinglevels look set to exceed this. According to Dealroom data up until31 May, 2024, GenAI startups had raised $18.8B and this numberis expected to hit around $45B by the end of the year. While the US is the clear leader in GenAI VC funding, even whenlooking beyond the investment secured by OpenAI, Europe andIsrael’s talent pool shines through. According to Accel’s 2023Euroscape report, European talent produced 50% more AI journalpublications than the US, with a similar citation rate. Thanks to world-class universities at the forefront of AI research andbig tech companies building strong AI research presences acrossthe region, Europe and Israel are well positioned to take advantageof the rise of AI. Created in partnership with data provider Dealroom, this reportexamines Europe and Israel’s GenAI talent hotspots and howthe region’s universities and research labs are fuelling a wave ofGenAI founders.
