In 2025, China’s commercial sector continued to evolve, driven by supportivegovernment policies, technological advancements, and changing consumerbehaviour. This year witnessed significant progress in various areas, highlightingthe dynamic nature of the sector and the businesses operating within it.New types of consumption, particularly digital and tech-driven consumption,experienced substantial growth as artificial intelligence (AI) and othertechnologies became increasingly prevalent. Service consumption is also on therise, as consumers seek more engaging and immersive experiences. Emergingtrends such as green consumption and emotional spending are opening upfresh avenues for businesses. Chinese commercial businesses have demonstrated remarkable resilience andadaptability in response to shifting consumer preferences and a competitivemarket landscape. The growing emphasis on consumer experiences hasprompted retail businesses to incorporate AI technologies into their productsand services, and to create offerings that merge retail with cultural, leisure, andsports elements. In light of the intensifying competition in the domestic market,some companies are pursuing international expansion for growth. Effectivelocalization strategies and strategic partnerships are crucial for their globalendeavours. With input from more than 160 top-tier mainland experts,Ten Highlights onceagain identifies the top trends of the past year and anticipates the developmentsthat will shape China’s commercial landscape in 2026. The year 2026, marking the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan period, is a criticaljuncture that connects the past and the future. We expect China’s commercialsector to continue its growth trajectory, driven by trends such as increasingdigital and tech-driven consumption, a rising demand for services, expandingrural markets, and a commitment to green transformation.
