Report from the High-level extended plenary meeting of the EU Victims’Rights Platform onthe EU Strategy on victims’ rights (2020–2025) 17 April 2023 On 17 April 2023,theEuropean Commission organised a High-level extended plenarymeeting of the EU Victims’ Rights Platform onthe EU Strategy on victims’ rights (2020–2025). The aim of the event was to exchange views on what has been achieved so farunder the Strategy and how to achieve best any remaining tasks. All speakers showed their commitment to theimplementation of the actionsunder theVictims’ Rights Strategy. The High-Level meeting was divided in four panels dedicated to the main strands oftheStrategy: strengthening cooperation and coordination to ensure effective access to justicefor victims of crime; effective communication with victims and safe environment forvictims in the aftermath of crime; improving support and protection to the mostvulnerable victims; strengthening the international dimension of victims’ rights. The meeting was moderated and chaired byKatarzyna Janicka-Pawlowska, ECCoordinator for victims’ rights. Panel 2: Effective communication with victims and safe environment for victims in theaftermath of crime A representative oftheInter-institutionalRelationsandCommunicationUnit,DGJusticepresented the main aspects of the EU campaign on victims’ rights, stressing onits main objective that is the need to create a movement of support for victims of crime. Thepanel continued with a very emotional presentation of the TOO CLOSEdocumentaryon child sexual abuse.The documentary is a collective voice of allchildren,mothers andall silent victimsofchild sexual abuse whocannot speak. Panel 3: Improving support and protection to the most vulnerable victims The third panel was dedicated to the support and protection measures for the mostvulnerable victims. A representative ofthe Gender EqualityUnit,DG Justicepresented the main aspectsofthe Commission proposal on combating violence against women and domesticviolence.A representative ofDG HOMEspoke about the challenges tovictims oftrafficking in human beingsand the revisionofthe Anti-trafficking Directive.TheECCoordinator for the Rights of the Child, DG Justicesent a written statement stressingon the need topromotethe inter-disciplinary Barnahus modeland tostrengthen theintegrated child protection system.A representative ofDG HOMEexplained the need tostrengthen the support and protection tochild victimsof sexual abusein the upcomingamendments of the Directive on combating child sexual abuse.A representative oftheFundamental Rights Policy Unit,DG Justiceupdated about the most recent policymeasures to enhance hate crime victims’ support taken in the context of the High LevelGroup on combating hate speech and hate crime.
