In many businesses, it hasbecome a critical asset at the heart of the business strategy: a game-changingtechnology, a brand that engenders feelings of trust and belonging, or adesign that brings joy through its beauty. Digitalization is accelerating this shiftof value from tangible to intangible assets, and transforming economies basedon natural resources to those based on intellectual resources. The speed of this innovative growth can be tracked in the numbers ofapplications for intellectual property protection in IP offices around theworld. WIPO collates and publishes this information annually in theWorldIntellectual Property Indicators(WIPI). This latest edition shows a record 3.7million patent applications were filed worldwide in 2024, a 4.9% increasefrom 2023 and a fifth consecutive year of expansion. This was the fastestgrowth since 2018, with many countries reporting a rise in applications.Global trademark activity also began to rebound after two years ofslowdown, while design applications reached 1.22 million, containing 1.6million designs, a second successive annual increase. This growth in intellectual property filings is a sign that market participants – both buyers andsellers – have trust in the IP system, testament to the increased focus that national governmentsare putting on their innovation ecosystems, with WIPO’s support for cooperation at the local,national and multilateral level. And it is vital that this confidence is sustained by a continuousprocess of reinforcement of IP standards globally, because businesses need a well-functioningIP ecosystem that facilitates the protection of IP globally.
