According to theWorld Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), thenumber of patents granted worldwide surged from1 million in 1990 to over 3.5 million in 2023.1At thesame time, hype cycles and expectations aroundnew technologies have intensified. responsible development, rollout and scalingof high-impact innovation. Grounded in extensive multistakeholder input, theframework explores key questions: what defines “goodinnovation”? What values and drivers maximize positivesocial, environmental and economic outcomes? Finally,how can we promote and scale such innovation? Social media has amplified the spread ofinformation about emerging technologies, fuellingviral marketing, while investor interest in early-stageinnovations has surged as firms race to uncoverthe next game-changing breakthrough. Whilemany of these new solutions hold great promise,relentless hype cycles can have unintendedconsequences, diverting attention and investmentfrom other high-impact opportunities. In the rush toembrace emerging technologies, investors may alsooverlook fundamental business considerations orbroader societal implications, leading to challengesdown the line. The eight principles outlined in this report provideguidance for innovators – from early-stage start-ups to multinational corporations – on developingproducts, services and business models thatdrive shared prosperity and advance sustainabilitygoals. The principles also enable decision-makersto create lasting social value. Case studies fromdiverse industries and geographies, spanning fromLas Vegas to São Paulo, illustrate how aligning on ashared set of principles can drive meaningful impact. By cultivating a more informed and strategicapproach to innovation, this work also aims to helpinvestors direct funding towards solutions with thegreatest potential for positive impact on people andthe planet – while shaping the next generation ofresponsible, high-impact businesses. This report outlines a framework for responsibleinnovation to guide decision-makers in navigatingemerging technologies, ensuring that investmentssupport solutions with meaningful, sustainable impact. Recommendations –Align investment and development withprinciples for responsible innovation:Companies and investors should use aprinciples-based approach to evaluateopportunities, prioritize resources andassess impact, ensuring innovations meetsocietal needs, mitigate risks and drivesustainable growth. The framework introduces eight guiding principleswhich provide a foundation for designing,developing and scaling innovations that addresspressing global challenges. Responsible innovationshould be: 1) collaborative, 2) sustainable,3) resilient, 4) human-centric, 5) transparent,6) accessible, 7) efficient and 8) scalable. –Integrate responsible innovation intoday-to-day
