Export/ImportPriceIndexesandTradeIndexes 1.ExportPrices (Appendix1) HowtheExportandImportPriceIndexesarecompiled 1.Definitionanduse ―The Export and Import Price Indexes measurefluctuations inthe prices ofgoodsexportedand imported.The indexes are used to gauge the effects of pricefluctuationsof these export/import items on domestic prices and the changes intheircosts. 2.Frequency ―Atthebeginningofeach month,pricesfor theprevious montharesurveyed. 3.Pricessurveyed ―Average monthly prices are surveyed in principle,based upon the points atwhichthe export/import contracts are entered into,so that they may serve asleadingindicators ofdomesticprices. ―Export prices are surveyed on an FOB basis,and import prices on CIF.Forsomeitems,however,tradepracticesare applied. 4.Itemssubjecttosurvey ―Only items whose export/import amounts account for more than 1/2,000 of thecountry'strading volume;that are representative of the price movements of itemsgroupedwithinsimilar industries;whose qualitystandardsareuniformlymaintained;andwhose time series on prices are tenable,are surveyed.As of 2025,212 itemsforexportsand237forimportshavemettheserequirements. ―Items marked without comparable price quotations for considerable period(e.g.vessel,weapons,aircraft,works ofart)areexcluded. 5.Methodofcompilation ―Classification ㅇBasic classification:The industrial classification set out inthe Korea StandardIndustrialClassification(KSIC)is applied with necessary modifications as thebasicclassification.This is further broken down into two sub-categories forexports-agricultural,forestry&marineproductsandmanufacturingproductsandthreefor imports-agricultural,forestry&marine products,mining productsandmanufacturingproducts. ㅇSpecialized classification:For user convenience,the indexes are alsoclassifiedinto foods/non-foods;energy/items other than energy;informationtechnology/items other than IT;and foods&energy/items other than foods&energy;as wellas groupingsbyuse(forMPIonly),tradeandindustrytype. ―Weights ㅇThe weights of individual items are expressed in permillage in accordancewiththeirsharesinthetotal transaction amount. ―Compilation ㅇThe headline indexes are compiled from Korean won-based indexes,which areproducedby converting the contract prices of exports/imports so that theirimpactson domestic prices may be easily followed.Indexes based on contractcurrenciesand onUS dollarsarecompiled as supplementaryindexes. ㅇThe formula used to aggregate the indexes is a Lowe Chain weightedformula.The price reference and weighting period are changed every years,soasto increase the extent to which the Export and Import Price Indexes reflectrealitiesthrough improvements in the selection of items to be surveyed andtheirweights,inline with changes inthetradestructure. 6.Notesonstatisticaluse ―The purpose of the index is to measure the changes in the price,not to presentabsolutepricelevels. ―The Export and Import Price Indexes are compiled on three different bases:theKoreanwon,the contract currencies,and the US dollar.Users are hence advisedtocheckthebase currencyfirst beforeusingthe indexesfor statisticalpurposes. ―The Export and Import Price Indexes for current month is preliminary andsubjecttorevisionnextmonth. ―The Trade indexes for current month is preliminary and may be revised upontherelease of the index for the following month.Additionally,the index for thegivenyear will be finalized in the press release issued in March of thefollowingyear,whenexport and importcustoms dataareconfirmed.
