Thepricing squeeze on solar modules has inevitably impactedmaterial suppliers. Simultaneously, the rapid evolution of celltechnologies – led by TOPCon, HJT, and XBC – is drivingnew developments in the module’s bill of materials, especiallybacksheets and encapsulation materials. This has also beenreflected in this 5thcombined TaiyangNews Market Surveyon Backsheets & Encapsulation Materials 2024/25. Thesurvey received responses from 17 companies providing thedetails of 184 products. With 4 new entrants and 2 previous‘backsheet-only’ suppliers now offering encapsulationmaterials, this year's survey highlights the growing dominanceof encapsulation in the module polymer segment. by several material suppliers and module makers indicatethat POE demonstrates the highest reliability, followed byEPE, with EVA performing the least effectively; the order alsorepresents costs from high to low. The choice also dependson the side of the modules – front or rear. As a reflection of the current high cost-pressure environmentthat module makers are experiencing, the EPE structure isgaining the highest traction. However, companies are alsodeveloping optimized EVA chemistries with low acid formationand better PID combatting capabilities. This allows modulemakers to try different combinations of encapsulation materialson the front and rear, with the front being more critical to attaina better cost-performance ratio. Encapsulation solutions for HJT have a different set ofrequisites altogether. In addition to providing a high barrierfor moisture ingress, the encapsulant also has to safeguardthe HJT module from UV vulnerability leading to UVID. Thesegment developed a smart solution to convert the UV lightinto the blue band, which not only avoids UVID but alsoimproves performance with improved light absorptance. Thetechnology can be applied to all mainstream encapsulationvariants – EVA, POE and EPE. Using down-conversionencapsulants has now almost become the standard for HJT.However, with more and more TOPCon modules also prone toUVID, the technology is promoted for TOPCon as well. While nothing has changed fundamentally, severaldevelopments have taken place on the polymer supply sideof solar. The encapsulation market has been growing in linewith solar manufacturing, touching nearly total shipmentsof 500 GW in 2023 and over 600 GW in 2024, respectively. As demand and geopolitical factors drive decentralization, production is gradually moving beyond China, albeit in smallquantities for now. There is no alternative to encapsulation materials at present, and the choice is between 2 core polymer chemistries –EVA and POE. In an effort to meet both ends – costs andreliability – the segment has developed a coextruded structure
