It is also an opportunity to showcaseinnovations, best practice, and smart solutions to inspirecreativity to tackle these future challenges.The Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovationorganized a space dedicated to showcasing ‘Edge ofGovernment’ innovations at the 2016 World GovernmentSummit. It included a series of exhibits of novel andground-breaking approaches to the globe’s most urgentpublic challenges. The exhibits brought to life a selectionof international case studies of government innovation andimpact on the most important public concerns of our time –health, environmental protection, public safety, and citizenengagement.By bringing these innovations together in one place and for aglobal audience, the World Government Summit was able tohighlight government innovations deserving of wider notice.Some of the innovations featured are well known, but manyare “below the radar.” All solve important public problemsand do so in a novel and impactful way. Hearing about theseinnovations first hand from the innovators themselvesinspired Summit attendees to think about how the ideasembedded in the featured innovations might be applied intheir own work.More generally, the organizers hoped that showcasinginnovation at the edge of government activity will inspiremuch more innovation in government.As the many examples of innovation in government collectedfor this project were reviewed, certain themes emerged inhow government organizations and entities are approachingtheir work. These themes reflect a new pattern for the publicsector problem solving, and taken together suggest a newglossary of government practice.Both the Edge of Government showcase at the WorldGovernment Summit and this companion report have beenorganized around this glossary, which is described in detail inthe following section.As readers go through the case studies presented in thisdocument, and recall the Edge of Government experienceitself, they are invited to imagine how these truly novel ideasmight be used in their own efforts to make government moreresponsive, more efficient, and more effective.Edge of Government Experience The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its forward-thinking leadership have long recognized theimportance of innovation and the primary role itplays in economic progress. The UAE Vision 2021highlights science, technology, and innovationas main drivers of growth and progress, andasserts their role in the UAE’s transition towardsa knowledge-based economy and sustainabledevelopment for the country.Concentrating the Nation’s energies even more squarely on itsinnovation goals, 2015 was declared as the Year of Innovationin the UAE by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin ZayedAl Nahyan. “Announcing 2015 as the Year of Innovation comesto support federal government efforts, attract national skills,increase distinguished research, as well as boost efforts tobuild a national cadre who are able to lead our future in thisfield towards more progress, prosperity and innovation” saidSheikh Khalifa. “We live today in a world witnessing rapidchanges and continuous developments, full of opportunities,discoveries and inventions” he added.In support of this, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin RashidAl Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UnitedArab Emirates (UAE) and Ruler of Dubai, launched The UAENational Innovation Strategy.The vision is to make the UAE among the most innovativenations in the world.
