Declining national math and reading scores have shown how much work remainstoachieve full academic recovery.Students and staff continue to face mentalhealthcrises,and historically high turnover strains teacher bandwidth andwell-being. Amid all of this, K–12 leaders are focused on developing new strategic plans, actionplans, and instructional programs for a changed landscape, all while targeting long-term goals and successes. It’s a huge undertaking, one made even more difficult in anatmosphere where polarized public discourse permeates the classroom, often puttingteachers and the public at odds when it comes to addressing sensitive subject matter.But for school districts to find solutions, discourse has to happen. Tackled with energyand empathy, these challenges offer leaders an opportunity to enact meaningfulchange.
