To achieve theabove strategic goal, the State and local governments have issuedmultiple regulations to increase the proportion of renewable energygeneration, further develop PV industry, and strengthen user-sideapplication. However, the power system still faces challenges in theapproach to addressing the rapid development and high-proportionaccess to distributed renewable energy. As a newmodeofenergyapplication,PEDFbuildingsare based on DC distribution system whileintegratingrenewable energy generation and distributed energystorage. It has become a trend that the distributed generation withsolar PV and battery energy storage (BES) as the mainstays, andelectric vehiclesare accessing the buildings as new energy consumers.Asa result,DC distribution system can reduce energy loss bylessening the conversions from DC to AC, and thereby alleviates thepressure of renewable energy impacts to utility grid. Therefore,PEDFbuildingscan effectively improve the system energy usage andcontrol efficiency and provide more security and reliability for buildingmicrogrid energy consumption. The application ofPEDFbuildings canbe used as a brand-new appropriate technology to achieve the long-termstrategic targets of building energy conservation,emissionreduction, and urban sustainable development, with a goal of net-zero energy consumption.Withthe support of local governments in China,more PEDF buildingprojects have gradually been constructed and operatedrecently, injecting strong impetus for this emerging technology. Thispaper intends to make an introduction to this engineering technologyfrommultiple aspects such as its application basis,developmentstatus,internal driving strength,and technical barriers in China.Section1summarizes relevant policies and standards which supportdevelopment ofPEDFbuilding industries. The investigation results weconductedfor more than 60 PEDF projects and their applicationcharacteristics,technology status aresummarized and estimatedinsection2.Section 3 focuses on analyzing what concerns theengineeringstakeholders,summarizingthestrengthsandweaknessesof the technology during development,and moreimportantly, identifying the policy guiding directions according to theappealsfor this technology.Conclusions of this research arepresentedin Section 4.This report not only makes a periodicsummary of the application ofPEDFbuilding technology in China, butalsoinvestigates and analyzes the applicability of differenttechnologies in this field.
