The shortage of new vehicles caused used-vehicle wholesale and retail pricing to hit recordhighs during the summer as many consumers and fleet buyers switched to the used market. We expect thatthe chip shortage wllcontinue to limit new-vehicle production and inventories throughout 2022.America's franchised dealers are all-in on EVs, and saw sales of EVs and other alternative-fuel powertrainsincrease throughout 2021. Alternative-fuel powertrains accounted for 9.5% of all new vehicles sold duringthe year. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 2.9% of all new-vehicle sales, up from 1.6% in2020. By the end of 2021, EV sales by franchised dealerships accounted for just under one-third of all BEVsales. We expect that as more new EV models become available in the coming year's franchised dealershipwill capture an increasing share of the EV market.2021 was full of challenges for light-vehicle franchised dealerships in the U.S. Even s0, average dealershiptotal sales set a record, topping $71 million, Total sales for all newlight-vehicle dealerships exceeded $1.18trllion after falling below $1 tillion in 2020, the first year of the pandemic.Looking ahead into 2022, we expect that sourcing new- and used-vehicle inventory will be top of mind fordealers across the country and that the chip shortage and its impact on vehicle production will extendinto 2023.
